AIKIDO SENGENKAN ORIGIN
In Sengenkan, we follow the tradition of Gozo Shioda, the founder of Yoshinkan Aikido, who was a senior disciple of Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido. Aikido’s characteristic is the rational use of the body that does not go against the law of nature.
In this way, we harmonize with the opponent (or partner) in order to control and subdue them – or better yet, to avoid fighting entirely. Aikido has a depth that goes beyond technique. At our Sengenkan dojos, we strive to improve our mind and body by performing our daily practice carefully and consciously.

SENGENKAN PHILOSOPHY
At Sengenkan, we would like everyone to feel the wonder of martial arts (budo) and the power of traditional culture. When we think of martial arts, we tend to think of fighting. But in Aikido, unlike other martial arts and sports, there are no competitions and no winning or losing. Rather, it is more important to improve oneself, and increase the “zest for life” that is already inside of you, by accumulating daily practice.
In that sense, the “enemy” to be defeated is within oneself. This is the basic idea of pure martial arts.
In addition to regular Aikido training, we also hold many seasonal events that have been handed down from ancient times, and activities to familiarize ourselves with traditional Japanese culture, and exchanges with overseas practitioners.
SENGENKAN WORLDWIDE
The Aikido Sengenkan International Federation is an affiliation of dojos, instructors, and practitioners, in different countries and cities around the world. The Head of the Aikido Sengenkan International Federation is Saburo Takashima. The headquarters dojo is Sengenkan in Tokyo, Japan. Affiliated dojos and instructors have a direct link to Sengenkan and to Takashima sensei. Affiliated dojos and instructors are independent as amongst themselves in their respective areas.
MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS
Dedication. Expertise. Passion.
Our team of instructors is united by a shared commitment to the principles of Aikido Sengenkan — discipline, respect, and continuous self-development. Each instructor is not only a skilled practitioner, but also a dedicated mentor who guides students on their individual path in Aikido.
Coming from different backgrounds and countries, our instructors form a global community connected through a common lineage and direct connection to the Sengenkan tradition. They continuously refine their skills through regular practice, international seminars, and close collaboration with senior masters.
In our dojo, teaching goes beyond technique. Instructors focus on building strong fundamentals, cultivating awareness, and helping students understand the deeper principles of Aikido — harmony, balance, and control without aggression.
Each member of our team contributes their unique experience, creating an environment where students of all ages can grow — physically, mentally, and personally.
Together, our instructors strive to pass on not only the techniques of Aikido, but also its spirit: the pursuit of self-improvement and the ability to bring harmony into everyday life.

HISTORICAL ROOTS
The headquarters dojo of Sengenkan is located in the Shinjuku Ward of Tokyo, across the street from the Ochiai stations of the Tozai subway line. The dojo occupies the entire 3rd floor of the Takayama Main Building ("Takayama Honkan"). The property was formerly the Tsukimigaoka Hachmangu shrine. The shrine was renamed as "Sengen-jinja" in 2010 and still exist in the back courtyard of the property.
The dojo boasts a training area of 150 tatami mats (approximately 300m2) making it the largest Aikido training hall in Tokyo. There is an entrance hall, main administration office, small lounge, large lounge, separate make and female changing rooms with lockers and showers, a small kitchen, and some other amenity rooms. The main dojo of 150 mats is an airy, spacing area with many windows and a wall-size mirror, with rafters to hang dogis. There is also a small dojo of 50 mats, that can be used for training, but is also used for cultural activities such as tea ceremony (chado) and calligraphy (shuuji), and can even be used as sleeping quarter for visitors attending training camps.
